It’s the season of love. Valentine's spending is expected to be on high gear once again this 2019. With headline inflation expected to decline further this quarter, how much can one spend to show and to win someone's love?

Love spending table 1

Looking at the particular products related to the celebration of Valentine’s month, UnionBank’s Economic Research Unit (ERU) found out that products related to Valentine's have become more expensive. As you can see in Table 1, the product group that includes Sugar, Jam, Honey, Chocolate & Confectionary has the highest increase.

Compared to last year, it will still be more expensive to give and to encourage someone with flowers. In addition, to write somebody a letter or a poem using artsy paper may cost one more than last year. Even just drowning out a broken heart with alcohol has become more costly than last year.

However, they say that “love is blind” and some may overlook the costs no matter what. Others will “keep it low” and stay on the safe side. What is comforting, nevertheless, is that “the best things in life are actually free”.
