It is said that nothing fails like success.

We do something in a certain way. It works, and we experience success. We think- ” this is how it needs to be done if we have to succeed,” and we do more of the same. Until one fine day, what we do does not work. Something has changed, and the very thing we were convinced was the reason for our success now becomes the reason for our failure.

Why is this?

Because we get caught in the trap of our own comfort of doing things in a certain way. We become prisoners of our own limiting beliefs, unwilling to chart new routes and explore new territories.

How do we escape the inevitability of our success failing?

We can do this by being paranoid and recognising that success is an iterative process and not a static process. Success of any sort never happens in isolation. It is always happening in an environment of uncertainty and change. Therefore, every time we succeed at something, we can do well to check what factors in the environment played a part in our favor. Mathematically, we experience success when a majority of events are in our favor, even though there may have been many other events that played out against us. This is where it is essential to understand that chance and luck are integral elements of any success we experience, and we should have the humility to acknowledge their role.

Success has the power to lull us into complacency. One good way to keep complacency at bay is by seeking out the company of those who can challenge your thinking and beliefs. They will help you build on your success and keep you from being sucked into the vortex of complacency that success creates.
